Sneak Preview!

I am very excited to show you some upcoming "shots" from ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL. Warning! Kinda spoilers!

First of all, the bad news: Nick Runge's last issue on interiors is issue 11. He is brilliant and awesome and I loved the issues we did together, but I think the monthly deadline was eating at his very soul, and he didn't want the book or the release dates to suffer, so for now, he's providing covers. AND a two-page sequence in issue 12 (a la Messina's pages in ANGEL:ATF # 10).

Now, the great news.

Stephen Mooney takes on the bulk of ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL # 12. A friendly reminder, Mooney is the genius who lent his genius to the Connor/Kate story in FIRST NIGHT. I am in love with his work from those issues, but I gotta say, his work on ATF is blowing it away. You won't believe your eyes, it's epic, painful, very personal stuff and Mooney is kicking ass on every page.

Here's an example of how great he is with the characters. First of all, Wesley makes sure he looks his best for HIS big reunion with Gunn.

Gunn ALSO wants to be ready, so he has all his pretty trinkets waxed and polished.

Spike, never one to be shown up, ALSO wants to look his best, so he fixes his hair:

All these dudes getting ready to meet up, but man, I wonder what happened to Angel? He's the star of our show, isn't he? I hope he's okay. Man, I'm getting worried.

Well, let's see a cover to issue 15 and see. Courtesy of my artistic soulmate and once and future ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL partner, Franco Urru!

Oh whew, there he is! I guess everything's okay for Angel...unless things aren't what they seem...but when has that ever been the case?

I cannot wait for you guys to see these issues. We've saved the best for the last (of AFTER THE FALL...not the world of ANGEL...but that's a story for another time).

Hope you like!

This Post is Canon.

Okay, I think I've officially been working on ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL for over a year now, right? I mean, I had written the script to issue 1 this time last year, hadn't I? It's all kinda running together like a big, fun, frustrating, sleep-losing, crowd pleasing, triumphant, handsome blur.

I'm writing issue 13 as we speak. I swear I didn't plan it this way, but the stigma attached to the number 13 is pretty accurate. Hells-a-popping. All the cards are on the table, evil is closing in, heroes are fighting for their lives...

...and I think there's some really really great character stuff in this. Like, I'm surprised it's flowing this well. Once again, the characters took over and surprised me in a key (as in, "entire series building up to it") scene.

Couldn't be more happy with how this is going. It's gonna be beautiful.

Earthquake!

I was standing against the wall at the Griddle Cafe much like Fonzie did at Arnold's, when I felt it ripple. My friend Matt and I realized it was an earthquake and headed outside. Once there, we confirmed with the other patrons that we were in fact, not drunk.

That was weird. But, good news everyone, Mark from ROAD RULES season 1 was there, and he was just fine.

Last thoughts on FIRST NIGHT

The above picture is Alex Garner's cover for the ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL: FIRST NIGHT: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY collected hardcover.

Wait, that mighta been too many titles. Sorry. Once I get titling, I just don't know when to stop.

Anyway, I am fully aware that the Volume 1 hardcover collects five issues plus extras, and Volume 2 is only three issues, so I spent the last couple of days making sure the extras make this purchase worth it.

Holy crap, I went nuts. I'm pretty sure I gave them too much to use. But I wanted to make the book as good as possible. I wish I could spoil some details, but to be honest I'm not sure which extras IDW is going to use. As soon as I know, you know. And anything that doesn't end up in the book will go here, I promise.

It's a ways off but just wanted to share.

One bit of trivia I didn't put in the book. The name FIRST NIGHT is actually what they call the New Year's Eve celebration in Red Bank, New Jersey, where I'm from. Not sure if this is a common name for said celebration, but the title always stuck.

And with that boring bit of trivia, I take my leave!

Wizard reviews SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL # 1

ANDY: "After two minis, a lengthy run on Angel: After the Fall and now this debut ish, I feel perfectly justified in saying: Brian Lynch was born to write Spike. It's like he's been living inside that bad boy vampire head his whole life! From the dead-on dialogue to the soul-searching internal monologue, I'm hearing James Marsters every time I read a Lynch-penned book spotlighting Spike. Here, readers get a glimpse at what Spike was up to in the days immediately following L.A.'s descent into hell. He's leading a ragtag group of survivors on a nomadic journey around the city, squatting in amusement parks and other sundry destinations to survive and taking on the demonic big bads when the fight is in his odds. He's also babysitting Fred-Illyria, a job that's bringing back the heartfelt feelings he once had for her, now that he's got his soul again. Lynch has consistently delivered on all his Angel and/or Spike work, and Urru's art looks as good as it ever has in this opening salvo. If you've been digging the Angel and Buffy books up till now, you'll definitely want to DVR this new Spike series from you local comics shop."

That opening sentence? Made me red-in-the-face happy. Wow. Thanks Wizard!

SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL # 1/ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL Vol 1 Hardcover on sale NOW!

I really hope you guys like. I am insanely proud of SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL. We weren't even sure we were going to do it. I said I'd try and write the script and if it wasn't good I was going to toss it.

What followed was a few days straight of truly enjoyable comic writing. I had such a good time with this. It's dark, it's fun, it's full of revelations and mysteries and guest appearances. This ain't no PHANTOM MENACE type prequel, people!

And Franco's best work to date is within these pages. It's all so stunning. I couldn't be more proud.

And you know how I feel about the ANGEL hardcover. It is truly beautiful. I can't get over how classy it is, and how much better these issues read all together.

Big day tomorrow!

Great week coming up!

Two of the things I'm most proud of (comics-wise, of course) come out this Wednesday:

1. The ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL vol 1 hardcover. So jam-packed with great stuff. Extras out the adorable little wazoo. I think you guys will love.

2. SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL # 1. My favorite SPIKE series thus far. Franco and I are bringing our A-game. I hope you enjoy it. Preview of the first five pages are over at newsarama.com, do please check it out!

Mommy's Lil' Angel, and Lil'yria!

Mommy's Little Angel!

Lil'yria!

Start pushing IDW to do an all-ages ANGEL book! You could see the wacky adventures of Angel, Baby Spike, Lil'Ryria and friends every month! Or not, either way, Happy 4th!

JULY 16

That's when Spike gets his own series again. Four issues as opposed to Angel's sixteen, but it's not the size of your series, it's how you use it.

Also, if you're going to the San Diego Comic Con, and I'm signing stuff, ask me to draw a Baby Spike. It's fun and easy!
Sadly, this just one of a few pictures I did in a series called MOMMY'S LIL ANGEL, about Angel and company if they were kids. Yes, it was a joke. And it made Ryall laugh, dammit!
